Grove Issues Statement on Commemorating Victims of Communism

HARRISBURG – On Monday, Rep. Seth Grove (R-Dover) joined members of the House for a press conference in the Capitol to honor the victims of communism, including the 100 million who lost their lives under communist regimes.

As a co-sponsor of House Resolution 392, which designates Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, as Victims of Communism Memorial Day in Pennsylvania, Grove released the following statement:

“Over the course of the 20th century, 100 million people lost their lives living under communist regimes. During the Great Purge in 1937 and 1938, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had upwards of 1.2 million of his own people needlessly executed. Such atrocities are repeated in other countries where communist ideology rules the political process.

“Stalin, like other communism leaders, was nothing more than a mob boss who ruled through intimidation and reaped the benefits of the hard work put in by those unfortunate enough to have been born in a communist country.

“Sadly, the world continues to witness the hammer and sickle used to quash citizens fighting corrupt communist dictatorships. Just as we saw back in 1968 when the people of the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic revolted against puppet masters in the Soviet Union, we are again watching as the people of Hong Kong protest their communist Chinese aggressors and demand more freedoms. I stand with those brave protestors who are bringing to light the hypocrisy that is communism and join them in demanding full democracy for the oppressed peoples inhabiting Hong Kong.”
