HARRISBURG – State Reps. Seth Grove (R-Dover) and Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township) announced they are co-hosting a “Can You Balance a State Budget?” workshop inside the Verandah Room of the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.

“This is an exercise to show people what it is like to formulate a multi-billion dollar budget. As lawmakers, we receive requests for funding and, if the request is appropriate, have to find the dollars to fulfill it. It is not an easy task,” Grove said. “Attendees of a budget workshop I held in October had to wrack their brains to balance a budget. I hope attendees of this upcoming event will be equally challenged by the task.”

Attendees will be given an overview of the budget process before being split into small groups and tasked with coming up with their own version of a state budget by using a worksheet. They will consider various policy options and will have to decide where to make cuts or raise taxes to create a surplus, a deficit or a balanced budget.

“The number of ‘moving parts’ in a state budget make it much different than the average household budget,” added Phillips-Hill. “This workshop will allow our constituents to simulate what our appropriations committee members and staff must try to accomplish when crafting a spending plan for the entire state. I’m looking forward to hearing their solutions to some of the problems we, as legislators, face.”

Seating for this scenario-based group activity is limited. To RSVP, call Grove’s district office at (717) 767-3947, or email jpopovich@pahousegop.com. Or, call Phillips-Hill’s district office at (717) 428-9889, or email tmetz@pahouse.com.
